Best Nature Walks in Milwaukee

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Milwaukee County is a great place to live. Getting outside and enjoying the late summer weather is something our staff members at Krause Funeral Home highly recommend. We love exploring the outdoors with our families and friends. Hiking a nature trail is an easy way to experience the beauty of our community, so we rounded up our favorite places to take a nature walk in Milwaukee.

Hank Aaron State Trail

Remember that a walk or a hike doesn’t have to be an uphill, all-day affair. An urban trail like the Hank Aaron State Trail is easily accessed and requires no special athletic apparel or equipment. This paved trail extends 14 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Milwaukee/Waukesha County line. At times wooded and serene then lively and metropolitan, this trail is the perfect outing for both amateur and experienced hikers.

Havenwoods State Forest

Summer is a wonderful time to visit Milwaukee’s only urban forest, Havenwoods State Forest, which boasts 237 acres of magical grassland, wetland, and forest and one of the best walking trails in the area. Explore over six miles of trails while you admire exciting wildlife, picturesque ponds, and beautiful wildflowers. Take in inspiring views from the 120-foot bridge or relax on a bench after a restorative stroll through nature.

Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve

This beautiful 73-acre park in nearby Ozaukee County features several hiking trails, wetlands, picnic areas, and scenic vistas. At Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve, you can look out over 90- to 100-ft bluffs for breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. Prepare to see wild animals in their natural habitats like migratory birds, deer, and other species. The preserve is also renowned for its fishing and birdwatching.

Scuppernong Nature Trail

No, we didn’t include this one because it’s fun to say the name—that’s just a bonus! Scuppernong Nature Trail is perfect if you’re looking to spend some quiet time in nature contemplating life or having a heartfelt conversation with a loved one. With three trails ranging between two and five miles, this makes for an easy half-day activity. Surrounded by leafy trees and peaceful wooded areas, this scenic walk is a great destination for a family hike.

We encourage local families to get out and enjoy nature this summer! If you live in New Berlin, Brookfield, or the surrounding area and have questions about our funeral and cremation services, contact our experienced staff today.
