When I opened my salon almost 14 years ago across the hall from Edgewood Tailors, Bessie walked in the door and handed me a Bamboo plant and said, in her endearing Greek accent, " this is for you..for good luck". I thought what a sweet gesture, I think I like her. As time progressed she would start conversations in the back hallway between our businesses and one day she asked if I could do her hair...she had the traditional black hair color and I said if I could change it up a bit then sure. We became fast friends after that. Over the years there were many trades for tailoring and hair services. My sister has 3 boys and 1 girl..lots of mending of tears and holes in favorite clothes and of course lots of hemming for growing kids. I had lost my Mom to Alzheimer's about a year before I met Bessie..Bessie knew instinctively that I needed a Mom..she listened to my complaints and celebrated my joys with compassion and tolerance. She let me know when I needed to re-evaluate my judgement and also supported me in times when I was sad. My job in return was to help her figure out her cell phone, look up anything on Google that she needed and honestly just spend time with her. I spent many hours just hanging out in her shop watching her work and listening to her talk. I never thought in that time in my life I would find a new friend to be added to my list of BFF's but on that day almost 14 years ago Bessie came into my life and I'm a much better person because of it..she was honestly one of the kindest and most compassionate friends I've ever blessed with and I will miss her everyday.

We have been going to Bessie for alterations for well over 30 years. In addition to being an excellent tailor, she was one of the nicest people we have ever known. We loved hearing her stories and seeing the pictures of the family gatherings. Everyone always looked like they were having a great time. We are really going to miss our dear friend. Our sincere condolences to her family.

I have known Bessie since 1962 when I was an undergraduate student and needed alterations. Since then, it was always a sense of magic and excitement to take clothing to her. Magic, most of all, of our conversations and the depth of her sweet spirit and triumph that survived a long journey of challenges ... and of joys in her lifetime that she shared in trust. Our lives had parallels and the joys of her children, as with mine, lit up her eyes and gave her so much joy of purpose and fulfillment. I shall never forget meeting my grown son at Brooks Brothers about 3 years ago where she was altering his suit ... and seeing the excitement and disbelief on her face when I arrived and she discovered that he was my son ... and she could actually meet him. Taking and picking up perfectly altered clothing always was extended heart-to-heart, almost soul-mate conversation that I shall always miss and remember. You, her children, had a loving, wonderful and devoted Mother. Rest In Peace, Bessie. You have fought a good fight and earned the gift of Peace. Dan Cotrone, Whitefish Bay. 414-322-5343
