I too knew Darrel as a youth hanging around Cooper Park. I remember Darrel as a person who had great strength and gymnastic abilities. I also remember him as a good boxer. There was a time at Cooper Park where a group of older boys attempted to chase us off the baseball field so they could use it. Darrel told this group he would take them on one at a time in a fight. The leader of the group sheepishly stepped forward to take on Darrel. It took all of 30 secs for Darrel to soundly defeat this leader. After this Darrel bravely announced who is next. The rest of this group left and we stayed on the baseball field. This is a memory that has always stuck with me. I have not known Darrel since my family moved almost 60 yrs ago. I saw his death announced in the Journal. My condolences to the family. Marty Coello

My sincere condolences to the family. Darrell and his family lived behind me. We were all friends and had a lot of fun. I remember his siblings calling for me at the back door saying, Oh for Sharon.

My deepest a most heartfelt sympathies go out to all his family and friends. A little story to share: I was about ten years old and my brother Lee and Darrel were hanging out at Cooper Park. Darrel shimmied up the light pole and made it sway back and forth. Next, my brother Lee shimmied up the light pole and stood on top and made the pole sway back and forth. After Lee came down, Darrel, not to be over done, shimmied back up the light pole, and made it sway back and forth. The next thing you know, they are both up there swaying the light pole back and forth. Darrel was so full of life, and certainly not afraid of anything. I will cherish my memories of him. God speed.
