Watch TributeElizabeth “Betty” McSherry Schmelzer, born March 23, 1926, took her rightful place in heaven on October 28, 2021. She was born in Ridgeway, WI and lived in Madison and Milwaukee WI, plus Des Moines, IA, and Omaha, NB. She and her husband Louis Schmelzer settled into their home in Arlington Heights, IL in 1961. After Lou’s passing in 2006, she moved to Luther Village in Arlington Heights, and to Elm Grove, WI in 2021.
Betty was very active in her PEO philanthropic organization and Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church for many decades, was a proud contributor to her winning bowling team and was heavily involved in PTA and other Arlington school programs throughout her children’s grade and high school years. And she loved playing bridge.
But family was always foremost for Betty. She never missed a game or a performance, was always the designated carpool driver and room mother. Every holiday was a joyous occasion and there was enough food to feed her kids and whatever friends tagged along. And they were always tagging along, because she was a great cook.
In addition to being a dedicated, loyal and caring mother, Betty was a beloved grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. A beautiful person, body and soul, she was loving, kind, compassionate, spirited and fun. She was always open to a good laugh, generous with her hugs and truly put others’ needs ahead of her own. Her strong faith in God, her positive attitude and her amazing personal strength and resilience got her and others through some major life challenges.
Preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Louis R. Schmelzer (1923-2006), and her youngest child, Daniel L. Schmelzer (1956-2018), Betty still has a large and loving family to celebrate her life. She is survived by her daughter Sherry (Scott) Reese of Palm Springs, CA and son Dean Schmelzer (Diane 1954-2021) of Brookfield, WI; daughter-in-law Stacy Schmelzer of Northbrook, IL; grandson Chad (Nina) Reese of Palos Verdes, CA; granddaughters Erica (Erik) Zipp of Wauwatosa,WI, and Lindsey (Ben) Haischer of Mequon, WI; great-grandsons Brady, Jackson and Cade Reese, and Gunnar and Bode Zipp; great-granddaughters Mallory Zipp, Ella and Elizabeth Haisher, and Elle Reese; brothers Leo (Phyllis) McSherry of Waupaca, WI and Raymond (Evelyn) McSherry of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
Services will be held in Wisconsin for immediate family.
