With profound sadness, we announce that Fotini Gamouras (nee Vasilopoulos), 86, passed away, with her daughters at her side, on July 2, 2022. Preceded in death by her husband, George Gamouras. Survived by her daughters, Paulina Nicopoulos (George), Demetra LaGalbo (Anthony); her grandchildren: Alexandra, John, Serafino, Fotoula, Sophia; and many nieces and nephews across the country. Fotini was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She was born in Kefalovriso, a tiny mountain village in the Messinia region of Greece. The youngest of 5 children, her journey to the USA began when she was a young girl and secretly approached her visiting uncle, asking if he could take her to America with him. He granted her this wish and a few years later she arrived in Sheboygan, WI, where she met the love of her life, George Gamouras. After they married, they moved to Milwaukee working side-by-side for over 4 decades in the restaurant business. She was a magnificent cook in their restaurant and for celebratory meals for her extended family as she loved sharing her Greek culture. She enjoyed listening to Greek music and would be the first person to get up and dance, even up until the last few weeks of her life.
Fotini was a remarkable gardener as well, and always had a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables that she shared with family and friends. She was a devoted member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for over 60 years and enjoyed working at the annual Greek festival. She also had the opportunity to travel to many European countries to visit her daughter.
Fotini was a beloved yiayia (grandmother) whose greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Services will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 9400 West Congress Street, on Friday, July 8, 2022. Visitation begins at 11:00 AM with church services at 12:00 PM. Burial at Pinelawn Cemetery to follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church would be greatly appreciated.
