Passed away on Tuesday July 24, 2018. He was born on June 30, 1938 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Following graduation from West Milwaukee High School, Gary honorably served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Dyess Air Base in Abilene, Texas. Following his military service, Gary attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1964. Gary was an excellent athlete, both wrestling and playing football for UW. He was an active member of the Delta Sigma Kappa fraternity at UW.

In 1966, he was accepted in the graduate program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Massachusetts. The Art Department awarded him a full, two-year Teaching Assistant Scholarship. Gary chose to major in the fine art of Ceramics and graduated with a Masters in Fine Art degree (equivalent of a PhD in fine art) in 1969.

Gary was hired by William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey as a fifth level Assistant Professor and began teaching in the fall of 1969. From the start of his graduate work until he retired in 2002, Gary’s ceramic, watercolor, and drawing work has appeared in more than 90 art shows and exhibits. He has had seven one-person shows and a one-person show of watercolors at Harvard University.

His numerous juried shows are highlighted by the Annual New England Exhibition at New Canaan, Connecticut, where his ceramic and watercolor work won several awards and prizes. These shows and exhibitions have allowed Gary’s work to be seen in the following states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Missouri, Virginia, Arizona, and Florida.

Gary married the love of his life, Judith Ann Schubert (nee Szentes), on June 22, 1963. Until Judy passed away on July 2, 2012, they were inseparable. They shared a love of dancing and they could do a mean polka! They were also accomplished skiers and they skied the slopes of Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire and New Mexico.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Erwin H. Schubert, his mother Mildred (nee Dales), his step-mother Mary (nee Kugler), brother Erwin A. “Sonny” Schubert, brother Phillips K. Schubert, and step-sister Sandy Rauter.

Gary is survived by his half-brother Thorne Schubert, his half-sister Tyke Hanisch (Schubert), his step-sister Judy Grablewski and many loving nephews and nieces.
