As my Milwaukee family celebrates Mom's life there, I can only be with them in spirit. But I want to tell a couple good stories about her. Blizzard of 78- January 79. I am coming back from NYC on the train, and she drove through that blizzard to get me at the Milwaukee train station. Mama Bear never leaves a cub behind LOL. We drove back to the house and the snow had drifted back into the driveway, blocking the way in. Dad came out and informed me that if I wanted in, I had to shovel my way in. Kathy Brovelli, Ann Asplund Kurtz and I did just that, and then Mom wrapped me in one of those blankets with the snaps, the early version of the Snuggy, and gave me s big cup of hot cocoa with Peppermint Schnapps... Also circa 1979. Kat and I were headed to see Rocky Horror, and Mom was busy making us toast to take along, and also gave us 3 or 4 rolls of toilet paper. Essentials, dontchaknow. Dad comes in the room and says, ""Mary, what the hell is all the toast for??" She says, in true Mom fashion, "I don't know, Don, they just need alot of toast!! And toilet paper!" He puts on the original WTF expression...and shakes his head and just laughs as he leaves the room... I adored them both. Everything I know about being Mama Bear came from her. Mary and Don were so good to me, and I will be forever grateful for their presence in my life. They are together again now, I hope.
