Gertrude “Mary” Asplund, age 88 of Muskego, WI passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Zilber Family Hospice on Friday December 7th. She was born on November 15th 1930 in Neosho, WI to the late Raymond and Cathrine (Kate) Bock. Mary attended Neosho Grade School and graduated from Hartford High School. She was involved in various sports as she was part of her school’s Girls Athletic Association. Following high school she attended St. Agnes School of Nursing and graduated with a BSN in 1952. She married the love of her life, Donald W. Asplund on April 23, 1955. They built a home in 1958 in Brookfield, WI where she lived for the next 50 years. They had three children Steve, Kathy and Ann. In addition to her children, they had many pets including cats (Boots, Tiger, Ohana and Samantha), dogs (Shautzie, Ginger and Spike) and a canary named Peter. After leaving her home, Mary moved into an apartment, enjoying the companionship of her cats, Ohana and Jojo. She worked as an RN at West Allis Memorial Hospital, Milwaukee County Hospital and then worked as a school nurse at Tonawanda School in Elm Grove. She was known as Mrs. “Aspirin”. Mary worked for the Elmbrook School District until she retired in 1996 after 25 years. Her interests included gardening, cooking and being a Packers and Brewers fan. Mary’s main interest was being involved in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. She traveled to visit her children and grandchildren that lived out of state and had two grandchildren that lived with her at times while their father traveled on his Naval deployments. She battled many health conditions including lifelong kidney disease, but despite these challenges she continued to be a part of her family’s lives. Proud Nana of Andy (Jennell) Brovelli, Erin (Adam) Rosenzweig, John (Nancy) Asplund, Samm Brovelli (Andy Molstad), Alyssa and Danielle Kurtz. Sweet Great Nana Mary of Wyatt, RitaAnn, Baby Brovelli, McKinley and Jacklyn. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband Donald W. Asplund, her brothers George and Edwin Bock, and her nephew Joey Bock.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 21600 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, WI, on Saturday, December 15, 2018, 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM. Funeral Service at 12:00 Noon. Burial to follow at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
