Age 92. Closed his eyes for the last time on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Born in Milwaukee, he was the son of Arthur G. and Bertha (Struebing) Schaefer, brother of Arthur and Grace.Jim's life was one of service to others. He was a life-long member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and was Financial Secretary for many years. He also had been a member of the Lutheran a Capella Choir of Milwaukee. Recently he sang with the chorus at Harwood Place where he lived for the last 22 years.Jim served his country as a member of the US Army in New Guinea and Australia in WWII.Jim's teaching career began at a Madison high school. He taught statistics at the UW-M School of Business for 32 years, retiring in 1982.During his retirement years, Jim greatly enjoyed cross-country auto trips well into his 80s, visiting friends and former students all along the way.Jim also gave selflessly to his family, caring for his parents and his sister at their Washington Boulevard home until the end of their lives. He also gave love and support to his brother, Arthur, and sister-in-law, Loretta, until their deaths.Jim is survived by his nieces and their husbands, Ann and George Brandt, Fennimore, WI and Linda and James (Ben) Bensinger, Dublin, NH and by several cousins and many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.Visitation at MOUNT OLIVE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5327 West Washington Boulevard on Saturday, April 28, from 10:00-11:00 AM. Service at 11:00 AM. Interment at Graceland Cemetery to follow. Memorials appreciated to Mount Olive Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
