The Distance by Danny Grimes I composed this poem for my loving mother and offered it to her eternal spirit this past Saturday. Love you, mama. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Yesterday I walked a road That long and winding went Beside the sea encircling A field of autumns’ golden scent To sea a distant tempest reel’d And shoals among the shallows To land a mist draped dream Of amber furrows fallow From the seaside height I saw A lonely sloop upon the foam A woman pale and beautiful Steer’d to a distant home I fretted now upon my path For fear she may not see The gathering storm clouds’ roiling wrath Stalking on her lee Then from the misty shroud Appear’d a tower bright and tall Unbent by endless battering A star upon its crystal brow My gaze returned now once again To pilot, ship and sea untamed Her hand was sure, the light was true Her compass ably aimed She steered upon the dancing waves As if on glassy seas Neither storm nor stony shore Barred her way to eternity For she was once as I was now And walked this road for me A lighthouse keeper duty bound To raise a lamp above the sea She kept me safe as houses As her mother did before Her beacon lit the trembling dark Beyond the oceans door So I must now take up the post And light this lamp for her To cross that glorious distance To a better, greener shore

Our churches were linked for many years - as part of the New Hope Larger Parish and then as a two-point charge. Jean was a talented and dedicated organist for many occasions. We extend our sympathy to Joe and to Jean's extended family. Michael and Carol Knight, Yorkville United Methodist Church

We have been blessed to know Jean for seven years. That is not a long time, but she was a dearly loved friend and traveling buddy. She was a special lady and we are thankful for the quality friendship we had with her and Joe. We love you Jean
