Passed away, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Loving husband of Eileen Halvorson (nee McDonald). Father of John (Carol), Mary (the late Joseph) DeBruin, Joseph (Kathleen), Margaret Emich, and Patricia (Mark) Nimmer. Grandfather of Sara (Erik) DeBruin-Myers and David, Alex, Andrew, and Melissa Nimmer.
John was born in Hibbing, Minnesota to the late George and Mary Halvorson on September 8, 1924. He and his family lived most of their early years in Minneapolis. He attended school there and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1945.
John joined the Navy in World War II and served 3 years, from 1943 until 1946 while on active status. He was commissioned Ensign in 1945 and served on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam CV-36, and was awarded the Victory Ribbon World War II, American Theater Ribbon, and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon.
After the war, John worked as an electrical engineer at Cutler-Hammer, Inc. and Eaton Corp. in Milwaukee for 41 years. He retired in 1987 with the title of Principal Systems Engineer, was a holder of U.S. Patents, and a member of the Eaton Society of Inventors.
Visitation at Clement Manor Chapel, 3939 South 92nd Street Milwaukee, Wednesday, November 8, 2017 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM. Private interment Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established by the family.
