Lyle Eugene Herwehe, 88, passed away Monday, September 4, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
Lyle was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by his wife Ellen Herwehe (Curley) of 34 years, son Jerry (Cheryl) Herwehe of Apex, NC, daughters Michelle (Jeff) Wheeler of Dunkerton, IA, Karen (Steve) Handrich of New Berlin, WI, and Kathy Uthe, Roland, IA; grandchildren Ben (Lori) Herwehe of Maryville, TN, Rachel Herwehe of Durham, NC, Cameron Herwehe of Mauldin, SC, Logan Herwehe of London, UK, Joria (Ben) Koons of Portland, OR, Evan Wheeler of Waterloo, IA, Danae (Dan) Gordon of Dunkerton, IA, Miranda (Seth) Dargy of Walker, IA, Chloe and Sophia Handrich of New Berlin, WI; great grandchildren Caroline and Eleanor Herwehe of Maryville, TN, Lyle Herwehe of Mauldin, SC, Brezlin, Odessa, and Zinnia Gordon of Dunkerton, IA; sister Benita (Verne) Griesman of Spencer, IA, and brother Alan Chipps of Monroe, IA.
The son of Lea and Helen (Danks) Herwehe, Lyle was born on December 9, 1934, in Newton, IA. Lea passed away in 1936; several years later, Lyle’s family moved to Hinsdale, IL. On February 22, 1947, Lyle was baptized at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hinsdale, IL. Lyle and his family moved back to Monroe, IA. Lyle graduated in 1953 from Monroe High School. Lyle served in the Army from Oct. 20,1953, until Sept. 15, 1955; he was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1962. He received the National Defense Medal, the Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. In October 1955, he married Victoria McConeghey. After attending AIB in Des Moines for accounting, he was hired by Equitable of Iowa in 1956. He was promoted to Manager of the Investment Accounting Section in 1964, the youngest ever for that section. On December 10, 1988, Lyle married Ellen Curley. Lyle retired as the Vice President of Equitable Investment Services in 1994. Lyle and Ellen resided in Des Moines until moving to New Berlin, WI, in 2003. Lyle also worked seasonally doing taxes at H&R Block for many years. Lyle’s patriotism was evident in his twenty year involvement with the American Legion. He loved selling poppies every Memorial Day.
Lyle was fantastic with numbers which made him a fierce competitor at dominos. He enjoyed traveling, especially driving to see family from coast to coast. He faithfully decorated graves at the Monroe Silent City Cemetery every year, and rarely missed Monroe’s annual Old Settlers celebration. He enjoyed steam engines at the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant and all things train related. He loved to garden, care for his rose bushes, and he even enjoyed a few computer games like FreeCell. His love for corn-on-the-cob, popcorn, and Tootsie Rolls is legendary. Lyle was the best Papa/Grandpa to his grandkids.
Lyle is preceded in death by parents, Lea Herwehe and Helen Herwehe Chipps; mother-in-law, Juanita Carver, brother-in-law, Marvin Davis; sisters-in-law Bev Chipps, Marsha Hogan, and Linda Donald.
A memorial service will be held at the VFW5716, 17980 West Beloit Road, New Berlin, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 4:00 PM.
