Margaret Vishnevsky passed away in the loving arms of her son, Robert Byrd, on April 18, 2020, at age 88.
Margaret loved growing up in Michigan’s U.P., where she developed a passion for sports, including skiing and golf; she was named Ishpeming’s Snow Queen for her prowess in ski jumping, and for many years she competed in the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s amateur championships.
A graduated of NMU, Margaret was a devoted sports fan, with a special fondness for college basketball. Her appreciation for music led her to become a teacher; she also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as a member of the Bel Canto Chorus, and was a long-time supporter of the fine arts, instilling that interest in her children.
Margaret enjoyed traveling the world and driving her classic MG convertible. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. Margaret took an intense interest in politics. She held a strong conviction for civil rights, participating in the Milwaukee marches of the 1960s. She also volunteered at Brother Booker Ashe’s House of Peace urban ministry.
“Corky”, as she was known to friends, will be missed by many. In addition to Robert, Margaret is survived by three daughters – Anastasia, Maria, and Nathania Vishnevsky; by stepsons, Joe and Jim Clark; and by her beloved grandchildren, Xylia and Nico. Thank you to all of the extended family for their comforting visits. Margaret loved and appreciated all of you.
Special thanks to Charity Yoder, the staff of St. Camillus, and especially dear “Saint Robert”, who cared for Margaret so devotedly during her long battle with dementia.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in remembrance of Margaret to a dementia charity of your choice.
