Philip C. Moloney passed away peacefully on September 25th, 2021 only two days short of his 78th birthday. He was the beloved husband of 53 years to Nancy (nee Petersen), proud and dear father to John (Mary), Kevin (Sandy) and Amanda (Cory) Johns, and adoring grandfather to Matthew, Lauren, Kelly, Erin, Madeline and Emily. He is further survived by sisters-in-law Diane (Jim) Grinsel and Linda (Paul) Engleman, many nieces and nephews and cherished friends. Phil was preceded in death by his parents John and Margaret; siblings Mary Margaret (Jerry) Sanders, John Edward Moloney, Ellen (Ronald) Johnson, Tom Moloney and nephew Tim Johnson.
Phil was born and raised in Watseka, Illinois and grew up in “the best place in the entire world to grow corn.” Phil received his undergraduate degree from St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa and his Masters degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He taught high school in Cleveland, Ohio for one year before coming to Milwaukee and teaching in the Milwaukee Public Schools for 36 years. He ran an Outpost program until he retired. Phil’s work in the program received national attention due to its innovative and effective style of teaching. He loved working with students and helping them reach their full potential. He was often stopped in the streets by his Outpost alumni to express their thanks for having made a meaningful impact on their lives. Being the ultimate “people” person, Phil treasured spending time with family, friends and any stranger who was up for a chat. He was a car enthusiast who could always tell you what cars offered the best “value.” He loved traveling and his last international trip was to Germany where he fulfilled a dream of driving without a speed limit on the Autobahn. It is difficult to express how much Phil will be missed by family, friends and the majority of coffee shops in the greater Milwaukee area!
In lieu of flowers or memorials, Phil would wish for you to buy a cup of coffee for a friend.
