Of Waukesha, formerly of New Berlin and Milwaukee, was called home to be with his loving God on June 7, 2009, at the age of 76. Beloved husband for 55 years to the love of his life, Catherine "Kay" (nee Follstad). Dear father of Julie (John) Rolfes, Debbie (Frank LaVora) Kranda, Kathy (Rick) Schaber, Karen (Dean) Beres and Tim (Lisa) Sands. Proud and loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Katie. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Lew and Laura (Kleppe) Sands, and his twin brothers Myron and Warren Sands. He is survived by his brother Dr. James H. Sands, of California; brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Dick grew up in Milwaukee and he and his brothers were choir boys at St. Paul Episcopal Church, on Knapp Street. He graduated from Washington High School. Dick was a loyal employee of Sears Roebuck Company for 35 years, and had proudly served for 21 years with the Army Reserves, 84th Division of Milwaukee, obtaining the rank of Sergeant Major-E9. Dick loved music, singing with the local New Horizon Singers for many years, and was also an extended member of the Milwaukee Choristers family. In his retirement years, he and Kay thoroughly enjoyed their travels to various interesting and exciting destinations around the world. Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, always ready to sacrifice to take care of his family. He will be truly missed. Visitation at the Funeral Home Wednesday, June 10, 4:00-6:45PM. Vigil Service 7:00PM. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 16000 West National Avenue, on Thursday, June 11, at 10:00AM. Interment Holy Apostles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the Milwaukee Choristers or Holy Apostles Catholic Church.
