Born to Eternal Life on July 29, 2011, at the age of 85. Sister Carmela was an elementary teacher in various schools in Wisconsin as well as in Bogota, Colombia. In Milwaukee she taught at St. Pius X School and at Divine Savior High School where she taught Spanish and French. In 1973 Sister Carmela began teaching ESL to the migrants at the Spanish Center in Milwaukee. In the following years she joined the staff at the Office of Hispanic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. She taught Spanish to both lay and clergy who ministered to the Hispanic Community in parishes. Sister Carmela used her gift tutoring individuals in Spanish and served as a translator in both Spanish and French. She also ministered to Hispanics in hospice at St. Mary's Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents Juan and Pamfilia (Nee Reymosa) Torres, brothers Carlos and John (Celia) Torres. She is survived by her sister-in-law Hopie Torres, nieces and nephews, friends and Salvatorians, sisters, priests, brothers and lay Salvatorians.Visitation is Thursday, August 4, 2011 at ST. ANNE'S SALVATORIAN CAMPUS CHAPEL, 1:30"2:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Sisters of the Divine Savior in memory of Sister Carmela Torres, SDS.
