Wallace “Wally” A. Krueger

Born July 16, 1924 to Gustav and Viola Krueger and passed from this life on August 25, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie, sisters Ruth Quast and LaVerne Witt, brother Ralph Krueger, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Krueger. He is survived by brother Roy Krueger, and children John and Claudia Krueger (Doug Stockey). He was devoted to his two granddaughters, Kelcey (Chad Blanton) and Erin, and great-granddaughter Addie.

Wally lived a full and happy life. Drafted in 1943, he was trained as a combat engineer in Texas and Oklahoma after which he went to England with the 1258th Combat Engineers. Three months after D-Day, Wally went to France and was assigned to Patton’s Third Army. His unit engaged in four major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. They built the longest tactical pontoon bridge in history across the Rhine River, where Wally also had an infamous Patton siting. After hostilities ceased, the 1258th was assigned to Nuremburg to help prepare for the trials, which included rebuilding benches for the war criminals to be sure they had back rests. Because of Wally’s fluency in German, he was assigned to interrogate prisoners and became acquainted with General Patton. During this time he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He returned to the States in 1946, and immediately went to work for Krueger Sand and Gravel until 1965 when the family business was sold to New Berlin Redi-Mix. He retired in 1986 and took a part time job as a bank courier with Marshall and Illsley until his second retirement in 1995.

Wally was an active member of Elm Grove Lutheran Church until his move to the Lutheran Home. He was a loving and cheerful person who always had a kind word for others. He worked hard, supported his family and never complained. Wally was loved and will be remembered by many.
