It’s almost 30 years since I met Bill the first time, in 1990. I came as a summer exchange and lived in Calmar for the whole summer, and I’ve been privileged to be his friend ever since. The years have gone so fast! Bill has been a good friend to the whole Elgsaas-family in Oslo, Norway, and we enjoyed his visits over the years, many of those with Sandy. Bill will be deeply missed. Bill played piano for my voice studio when I was a voice teacher at Carroll University. He also played for student recitals. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor, was cooperative and helpful to the students and one of the kindest people I know. He will truly be missed by his friends, colleagues and students.

I know Bill from my time teaching at Penfield Children’s Center. I can’t imagine there’s a better example of the kind of person we all should be than what he exuded every day. My heart is sad that this kind, generous, selfless person is gone from a world that needs much, much more of him. I’m sure that though like myself sadness is the prevailing feeling for everyone who knew Bill, I’m also very happy that I knew Bill.

Bill - What a great family friend you were to us! Having grown up in Calmar, you were a neighbor that everyone enjoyed spending time with, and I can remember your presence as a high school chorus teacher. Regardless of the distance, you always kept in touch with us, and took the time to send a Christmas Card each year. You have fought a great fight, but have surrendered to a beast which has overcome many. God has called you home, and I wish all survivors a time to cherish his life, and remember the man he was.

Mr. Bill you were one of the kindest and most generous volunteers Penfield has known. You gave your time, your attention and your love to all the children and staff that you encountered. You were a blessing to us! You will be missed. We love you! God Bless.

To my lifelong friend, Bill, you shall be missed. We grew up together in Fredericksburg and were friends through grade and high school. How we both loved our music, and the duets we played. Then we were roommates at UNI (Shull Hall forever). And we’ve kept in touch for the last 50 years. You were so talented, really gifted! It was always my privilege to call you friend. You were a truly a friend with a great heart Sandy, sending you love and hugs❣️

I am saddend to learn that "Mr. Bill" has passed. I worked at Penfield Children's Center for many years, and one highlight was Mr. Bill. The children and staff alike, just loved him for him, such a caring and gentle soul. May the angels great you at the gates of heaven, and prayers to the family left behind.

Bill will be really missed. He was my neighbor for most of my childhood while growing up in Calmar Iowa. He even tried to teach me piano lessons as a young kid, but it did not take . No offense to Bill , but it just wasn't my thing . He was in charge of music at our church back home, and as time went by, he became a really close friend. We both have a love of our Northern Iowa Panthers, and then in the early 90's, we both find ourselves living in Wisconsin. It is here, where we spent a lot of our time together on weekends goofing off and catching our occasional Iowa / Wisconsin football or basketball game. He always was a great friend and would be there for anybody that asked. We had lost touch since I moved to Phoenix Arizona around 2009. I wish I could have been there to support him, but it sounds like he had a whole world full of people that loved him. Sandra Bell, I'm so sorry for your loss and for everybody back there who considered him family. He is gone but he definitely will never be forgotten. God's peace my friend. Craig Winter

Bill was a light to all of us at St. Stephen the Martyr. His beautiful music and enthusiastic choir moved the spirit! Bill was also a deacon and would preach occasionally. One of his sermons was about a childhood friend who died in a car accident a car that Bill was suppose to be in at the Time. I think he will now be seeing his friend again! Thank you Bill for your witness of God’s love, your grace during your illness, and your service.
