Michael Lindsay left a message on June 25, 2018:
It was by coincidence that, as a resident of Eau Claire for the past 40 years, I bought a copy of the Milwaukee paper and read Art’s obituary. I had known Art best when I was teaching in Milwaukee in the early ‘70s and served with him on the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies (WCSS), although our paths had also crossed occasionally in the late ‘70s and into the early ‘80s after I returned from California to Wisconsin. I remember Art especially as being jovial personally and dedicated professionally. His long-time leadership and contributions helped to establish WCSS and Wisconsin as one of the 2-3 finest states for social studies education in the US (this isn’t just a contention; there are data for this). Besides my collaborating with Art on the WCSS executive council, I very much enjoyed and appreciated our other contacts, and I express my condolences to Joyce and the rest of Art’s family and friends. Dr. Rumpf was a person who encouraged teachers to be their very best, and was an excellent leader in the Social Studies field. He wanted what was best for educators, and for those being educated.
