Born into Eternal Life on August 9, 2017 at age 79. Loving husband of Leah R. (nee Zummak) Lundgren. Beloved father of Robin (Kenny Jackson), Patricia, Michael and Jodie (Jim Perzacki). Doting grandfather of Joshua (Danielle), Michael (Caitlin), Kylie, Nicholas and Jordan. Also loved by additional family and many friends. Preceded in death by his parents Carl and Mary Lundgren and his sister Patsy.
Tom was in the skilled trades as a tool and die maker and a member of the UAW Local 75 at American Motors in Milwaukee. He retired after the plant closed having worked there for 30 years. Always busy and active, Tom never had ‘down’ time. While he worked at American Motors, he also took up teaching tool and die making at MATC where he taught his knowledge of the trade for many years.
While Tom was still working full time and teaching, he also did endless volunteer work with AA. He was so proud to celebrate 41 years sobriety this past August 1. He attended many AA meetings, conventions and conferences over the years and had countless friends in recovery. He was passionate about volunteering in the prisons and helping to change the lives of the inmates. He mentored too many people to count through his dedication and desire to carry the AA message.
Several years after Tom’s retirement, he finally made the move he longed for to northern Wisconsin where he enjoyed the life outdoors. While he was still able, he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing to mention a few. He lived in Athelstane, Wisconsin for almost 20 years before returning to Milwaukee to be near family.
Anyone who truly knew Tom knew that he was a gadget guy and couldn’t resist some new gadget he would see on TV. You couldn’t tell Tom that you liked something or he would go out and buy it, only adding to his never ending collection of stuff.
Tom’s generosity was something that couldn’t be measured. Whether it was requesting his time and talents or just asking for a kind word – Tom was always there. If there was a request of Tom to borrow a few bucks he never hesitated.
Over the last couple years, as Tom’s health began to decline he never wavered in his generosity or good nature. He loved having visitors and welcomed any opportunity to go out to dinner. He loved to eat!
Tom and his beautiful and loving bride Leah, had celebrated 57 years of marriage in April of this year. Over the last several months Tom & Leah were inseparable. From their union, they had four children and five grandchildren. If you were to ask Tom what he was most proud of he would say his children and grandchildren. He could never spend enough time with his family. While he enjoyed time with his children, it was the time with his grandchildren that truly filled him with so much joy and happiness. He so loved all the special time he spent with them.
Tom peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 9 surrounded by family. He did it his way and for that we are grateful.
The family would like to send appreciation and special thanks to the staff at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital on the Lake. There are no words to describe the compassion and care the hospital staff provided not only to Tom, but to our entire family. We cannot thank these dedicated health care professionals enough.
