(Nee Woltring) Age 79 of Mequon, WI, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 2, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
She was the beloved wife of the late Bryan E. Gruenewald for 45 years. Loving mother of Lynda (Gary) Gruenewald-Schmitz, Kurt, and Caryl. Fun-loving grandmother of Megan (Jacob) Charles and Cory Schmitz. Proud great-grandmother of Briella and Mason Charles. Cherished sister of Beth (Ron) Peterson, Mary (the late Kenny) Bronson, David (Meridi) Woltring, Brian (Joyce) Woltring, and Gayle (Robert) Bierman. Further adored by a host of many other relatives and friends.
Karen was born on July 12, 1943, in Thiensville, WI, to the late Elroy and Margaret Woltring. After attending Dominican High School and starting a family, she graduated from Cardinal Stritch University. She became a math teacher inspiring middle school students across most of her career at St. Luke’s School in Brookfield, WI. Faith, family, friends, and having fun mattered most to Karen. She enjoyed music and sung as a member of the St. Eugene Congregation Choir and attended as many musical events and celebrations as possible. She was a German Club member and Wendelstona dancer at the Bavarian Inn, a master sheepshead card player, and had an adventurous spirit for traveling the world. She was an accomplished baker who added nuts to everything, loved to cook for her family, loved Kopp’s custard with nuts, and was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 7001 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 6:45 PM. Service of Remembrance at 7:00 PM. Additional visitation will be at St. Eugene Congregation, 7600 North Port Washington Road, Fox Point, Wisconsin, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM. Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM. In honor of Karen, please feel free to wear your favorite colors!
An inurnment will take place on Saturday, March 25, for immediate family only at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
