(Nee Sherrer), was born on March 21, 1922 in Marianna, Arkansas, to Georgia Mabrey and William Bailey Sherrer, Jr. Mary Catherine Simpson, proud mother and loving widow of Theron Simpson, Sr. died peacefully in her home surrounded by family on October 27, 2020 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the young age of 98.

Mary, intimately referred to as “Ma” by her children and “Sister” among her siblings and inner circle, is survived by her children: Theron Jr., Douglas, Mary Ann, Margaret, Marilyn, Miriam, Marlene, Madeleine, Robert, Monica, Michele, Mae, Mya, Anthony, and Marc. Mary is also survived by the next generation of Simpsons to include 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theron Sr.; three children—Gerald, Ronald, and Maureen; and her siblings—Marshall, Robert, and Frankie.

The Simpson family will host a viewing for family and friends on Monday, November 2, 2020 from 3:00 PM – 6:45 PM at Krause Funeral Home, 9000 West Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Visitation will adhere to Covid-19 safety measures. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband in a private ceremony at Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The family will host a “Celebration of Life” to commemorate this exceptional woman on a future date to be determined once in-person gatherings are deemed safe.

Dear Simpson Family, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dearest Mother. She was a gem and a friend to my mother, Virginia Reyes. My mother treasured her friendship when we lived in Milwaukee and even after we moved from the city. We went to school with you kids at St. Boniface. I knew your sister, Maureen, she was in my class and I always admired her beautiful, black, curly locks. Maria, our oldest sister, passed away from cancer, February 8, 2020. Maria, was in the same class along with Miriam (I think). I remember all the girls were Ms and the boys were Rs. I couldn't keep you all straight, so stopped trying. Our brother, Juan, passed away in 1981. My sister, Joanne, is the only one left along with me. Please accept my dearest sympathy. She was an amazing human, a wonderful mother and friend to my mother. To my sweet sweet grandmother; I feel like a piece of me is gone and there's a huge hole in my heart. I will never be the same with you gone but I know that you would tell me as always; to continue to "love on all of my family" and that's what I'm going to continue to do; I'm glad you can rest now and you and Pops are together again; I love you Ma and I will miss you dearly♥️

My deepest sympathy to Simpson family.

I remember Aunt Mary as that sweet, loving, pretty mother of 18 beautiful children, who lived in that little white house on 12th Street. I always felt welcomed in that house. It was full of love and laughter. I was friends, as well as a cousin, of her oldest daughter, Mary Ann. Aunt Mary was always kind and loved all of her children, no matter what. Her maiden name is Mary Catherine Sherrer. So, she is the last of the oldest Sherrers, the matriarch of the Simpson family, and the last of the "old school" mothers. She will be greatly missed!

For me, my Mother’s greatest accomplishment was not birthing 18 children – she didn’t do that by herself. To me, my Mother’s greatest accomplishment is that she survived her childhood misfortune and she grew to become an intelligent, resilient, talented, witty, loving, honest, grateful, Christian, and beautiful woman and very present caring Mother. My Mother was a person who had no idea how wonderful she was and how much she made the world a better place. We tried to keep her with us but she must be permitted to rest. After caring for so many, she deserves it. Rest Mommy. I love her very much and I will miss her terribly. Your daughter, Mary Ann
