Don Schumaker Mission House 1959 left a message on August 11, 2016:
I remember Marwood's laugh. I asked him to be in our wedding. And he drove from Holgate to Eastern Ohio to do it. I think the last time I actually talked with him was when Betty and I came to meet the twins. He has a place in my memory, for that I am grateful.
William Bertsch, Mission House class of 1959 left a message on August 7, 2016:
I fondly remember Marwood beginning Withey's the days at Mission House. Our lives crossed paths many times. He was a man of great faith and inspiration to me. I offer my sympathy to his family. The church has lost a stalwart leader. God continue to bless you all.

Like this candle, Marwood was good, sturdy wood, down to earth, and at home on water, like "a tree planted by the aters of life, who brings forth fruit" (Psalm 1), deeply rooted, yet reaching to the sky, a fast and loyal friend, with wit and wisdom, a faithful minister in an often fickle church, with humor and hope to, and beyond, the ends.
Mark Thomas, Heidi and Roland's Son left a message on July 26, 2016:
My dad was on the committee who brought Marwood to us. Oh, the subterfuge and intrigue.......starting with the meeting at the Oasis in Illinois. Reverend Rettig came to our church when I was in confirmation and we had to take notes on sermons, which included his "trial" sermon. I have no idea anymore what he said, but I remember the presence, the booming voice. I thought it was a great sermon, and took voluminous notes. I am sure I voted "Yes." Some time later, for a Good Friday service, I was to boom Eloi, Eloi, Lamma Sabbachthani from the balcony and he coached me relentlessly. I could never replicate that booming voice. But my pronunciation was flawless. Marwood also hired me, and trained me, to pour tar in the cracks in the church parking lot. He said it was the worst work he ever knew. I am still deciding. He was a good friend and hunting buddy for my father. Peace to Phil and Perry, my bell ringing partners, and to young (in my memory) Elizabeth. And to Maxine, who brought so much grace to us. I know you will miss him.
Paul MacAvaney left a message on July 26, 2016:
I first met Marwood when he was called to be an interim pastor at our church in Milwaukee. His sermons were like fireside chats: inspirational, not 'preachy', but always filled with deep wisdom and -- of course -- a good dose of humor. A great teacher and role model, Marwood will be sorely missed.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

What an unforgettable journey was the earthly life of Marwood Rettig! As a member of the Search Committee at Immanuel in West Bend, calling him to minister to our congregation was one of the finest decisions we could have made. The resounding favorable vote from the membership confirmed that everyone agreed with us, and the years that followed were those of endless gratefulness for his leadership and commitment. He will also be forever remembered fondly by our family for his participation in our wedding, along with the Rev. George Schowalter. Blessings to Maxine and family, with our heartfelt sympathy.

Only great memories of Marwood and his time at Immanuel. He saw our family through some very good and rough times. He baptized two of our three children. I will never forget the day he was introduced to our congregation and his coming out carrying Elizabeth and having the two boys close at hand. We were thrilled to have this young family join us. Thank you to the family for sharing him with us.
