Elizabeth “Liz” Tyre (nee Litton), wife of 72 years to Edward Tyre, passed away peacefully on May 9th at the age of 94.
She was born on April 25, 1924 to Park Stewart “Parky” and Marguerite Litton (“Nonnie”). She and her younger brother John (“Jack”) grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elmwood, IL. Not only was she an exceptional student in high school, she was also involved in the school newspaper, theatre and basketball team. She attended Rosary College in Lake Forest to study library science and botany, earning a full scholarship for academic excellence. Liz married her high school sweetheart, “Eddie” on March 2, 1946 shortly after his return from WWII service in the US Army Air Corps. They began raising their family in Lombard, IL then moved to Shorewood, WI in 1970, establishing a “family hub” in Southeastern Wisconsin where most of her large family still lives or visits frequently.
In addition to raising 7 children, Liz was an avid reader, skilled writer and passionate conversationalist who was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage, loved dogs (especially Cairn terriers) and lived a life of service to her family and community. She was a dedicated volunteer for many organizations, including the Red Cross during the war and later for her local libraries and parishes and at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She worked in the office at Montini High School while her older children were students there, and later on for Dr. Sam McCready at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Liz wrote many beautiful poems to commemorate special family events, and was also a published poet. Her legacy lives on in her 6 surviving children, 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, instilling in all of them a love for books, nature and all things Scotland and, above all, pride in family and heritage.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack and her son Kevin Tyre. She is survived by her husband Edward Tyre; children Dr. Timothy (Marilyn) Tyre, Doug Tyre (Carlotta Lembach), Brian Tyre (Julie Reimer), Betsy (Dan) DiDomenico, Dr. Chris (Lisa) Tyre and Margaret “Meg” (Pat) Vukelich; grandchildren Emily (Andy) Hepburn, Lisa Sunshine (Pete) West, Kateri (Graham Blankenbaker) Tyre, Sean Tyre, Jennifer, Nathan & Colin Pollesch, Tony, Daniel & Frank (Kristine) DiDomenico, Ian Tyre, and Erin, Matt & Grace Vukelich; and by great-grandchildren Lauren & James Hepburn, Chloe Ewing, Cody, Dylan & Jesse West, Liliana Pollesch and Wesley DiDomenico.
Visitation will take place at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church in North Lake, WI (W314 N7462 Hwy 83), on Friday, May 25th from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM with the Funeral Mass at 2:00 PM.
