Sister Mary Ruth Dittman, SDS was born Esther Elizabeth on April 29, 1924 in Sheldon, Iowa. She grew up on a family farm and entered the Sisters of the Divine Savior at age 24. She was among the first Salvatorian Sisters assigned to Holy Name School in Wausau, Wis., and also taught in Bloomer and Sheboygan Falls, Wis. and Sisseton, S.D. In 1956, Sister Mary Ruth was one of two sisters who opened St. Joseph mission school in Huntsville, Ala. After 15 years in teaching, she became a licensed practical nurse and followed her heart to care for newborn babies. She served at St. Joseph Hospital in West Bend and later, Milwaukee County General Hospital. Sister Mary Ruth also offered grief support to parents of babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, illness and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). She continued those ministries after retiring to Phoenix in 1996. Sister Mary Ruth died on June 18, professed 69 years. She is survived by sisters Mary Ellen Dittman and Rose Duncan; brother Richard (Mary) Dittman; sister-in-law Norma Dittman, brother-in-law Nile Holmes, extended family and her Salvatorian Family.
Visitation for Sister Mary Ruth will begin at 12:45 PM on Monday, June 25 at St. Anne’s Salvatorian Campus, 3800 North 92nd Street in Milwaukee. A remembering service and Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:15 PM. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery will be Tuesday, June 26, 9:00 AM.
